A Restful Alternative

Have you ever been around a "Type A" personality?

One of those multi-tasking, hard charging, get it done yesterday people?

When someone suggests that there may be more to life than just gaining speed, these folks are inclined to say, "Better to burn out, than to rust out!"

But there is increasing evidence that this kind of pedal to the metal lifestyle may not be the most effective or productive way to get valuable things done.

In fact, if we don't take a rest on a regular basis we may end up doing more harm than good.

Losing just one night's sleep makes brain prone to 'sudden shutdowns'

tired woman

Being deprived of sleep even for one night makes the brain unstable and prone to sudden shutdowns akin to a power failure - brief lapses that hover between sleep and wakefulness, according to researchers.

"It's as though it is both asleep and awake and they are switching between each other very rapidly," said David Dinges of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, whose study appears in the Journal of Neuroscience.

"Imagine you are sitting in a room watching a movie with the lights on. In a stable brain, the lights stay on all the time. In a sleepy brain, the lights suddenly go off," Dinges said.

The findings suggest that people who are sleep-deprived alternate between periods of near-normal brain function and dramatic lapses in attention and visual processing.

"This involves more structures changing than we've ever seen before, but changing just during these lapses," Dinges said.

The  bottom line? If you want to experience a personal power failure, keep burning the candle at both ends.

The same principle holds true in our spiritual lives. Jesus put the importance of balancing service and rest in its proper perspective in this famous passage of Scripture.

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Is it better to burn out than to rust out? From Jesus' perspective there is no need to "out" at all.

Take time to serve the Lord. But take time to rest in the Lord as well.

As long as whatever you do is "in the Lord" you will find the strength, the peace and the power to serve with joy and to rest in His love.

Is E.T OK?

Some churches are big enough to have their own radio stations. Others are big enough to have their own bowling alleys. But it takes a really big church to have its own observatory.

The Vatican not only has its own observatory, but its head astronomer raised a few eye brows this week by offering the faithful a take on the existence of extra terrestrial civilizations.

Vatican: Belief In Extraterrestrials Is OK

(CBS 11 News)
The Vatican has turned the religious world on its ear by saying that the belief in aliens does not contradict the Catholic faith.

Reverend Jose Gabriel Funes, the Vatican's Chief Astronomer, said Tuesday that the notion there could be other forms of intelligent life in the universe, "doesn't contradict our faith."

"Anything is possible with God, right? That's basically what they teach us," said North Texan Shawn Steinke. "I think it's a good move on the Catholic Church."

In an interview for the Vatican newspaper entitled "The Extraterrestrial Is My Brother," the Jesuit Director of the Vatican Observatory Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes said that ruling out the existence of aliens would be like "putting limits on God's creative freedom."
http://cbs11tv.com/watercooler/ufo.files.released.2.724403.html

As we have discussed in this space, the notion of extra terrestrial life finds real problems when exposed to the light of Scripture.

But the perspective of Reverend Funes becomes more troubling when we examine some of his follow up ideas concerning the nature of our so-called "brothers".

Asked about implications that the discovery of alien life might pose for Christian redemption, Father Funes cited the Gospel parable of the shepherd who left his flock of 99 sheep in order to search for the one that was lost.

"We who belong to the human race could really be that lost sheep, the sinners who need a pastor," he said.

"God became man in Jesus in order to save us. So if there are also other intelligent beings, it's not a given that they need redemption. They might have remained in full friendship with their creator," he said.

Father Funes went on to say that Christ's incarnation and sacrifice was a unique and unrepeatable event. But he said he was sure that, if needed, God's mercy would be offered to aliens, as it was to humans.
http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0802629.htm

Aliens not only exist, but are not in need of redemption?

And how do we know this, exactly?

Certainly not by God's revelation. In fact the Bible indicates that there is not a single part of God's creation that has not been effected by the fall of man.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. (Romans 8:18-25)

So do we believe Reverend Nunes? Or the Bible?

It has been said that there are only two ways to attempt to answer ultimate questions in life - revelation or speculation.

When we abandon God's Word and exalt the conjectures of human beings we are setting ourselves up for confusion at best, and deception at the worst.

But when we learn to see life through the lens of Scripture a remarkable blessing awaits.

Thus says the LORD:

“ Cursed is the man who trusts in man
      And makes flesh his strength,
Whose heart departs from the LORD.
For he shall be like a shrub in the desert,
And shall not see when good comes,
But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness,
In a salt land which is not inhabited.
“ Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
And whose hope is the LORD.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
      And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit. (Jeremiah 17:5-8)

Raided By A Lost Ark?

He's back.

After an almost decade long hiatus, Indiana Jones hits the big screens this weekend.

And with the latest movie in the series, interest has been stirred again on the so called "Lost Ark".

German Archaeologist on Trail of Ark of the Covenant

BERLIN —  It is only a breathless Hollywood script: treasure-hunter Indiana Jones races with German archaeologists to track down the fabled Ark of the Covenant, the chest that held the stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments were etched.

Now German researchers claim to have found the remains of the palace of the Queen of Sheba — and an altar that may have held the Ark.

The discovery, announced by the University of Hamburg last week, has stirred skeptical rumblings from the archaeological community.

The location of the Ark, indeed its existence, has been a source of controversy for centuries.

Regarded as the most precious treasure of ancient Judaism, it is at the heart of a debate about whether archaeology should chronicle the rise and fall of civilizations or explore the boundaries between myth and ancient history. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,355264,00.html

Many wonder what happened to the Ark of the Covenant.

The fact of the matter is that no one knows.

The last reference we have to the earthly ark goes back to the time of King Josiah.

Now Josiah kept a Passover to the LORD in Jerusalem, and they slaughtered the Passover lambs on the fourteenth day of the first month.  And he set the priests in their duties and encouraged them for the service of the house of the LORD.  Then he said to the Levites who taught all Israel, who were holy to the LORD: “Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David, king of Israel, built. It shall no longer be a burden on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.  Prepare yourselves according to your fathers’ houses, according to your divisions, following the written instruction of David king of Israel and the written instruction of Solomon his son. (II Chronicles 35:1-5)

This event took place about 40 years before the Temple would be destroyed by the Babylonians.

The notion that the ark was sent out of Israel by King Solomon is refuted by the fact that the ark was in Jerusalem some 400 years after he passed from the scene.

We may not know where the ark went following the time of Josiah, but we can know why it passed from the scene.

In Jeremiah chapter seven we discover that the people of Israel had fallen into the trap of putting their faith in holy things, rather than the Lord Who made them holy. They believed that they were immune from judgment because God would never allow His Temple or His ark to suffer at the hands of their enemies.

Jeremiah warned the people that this was an empty hope.

“Return, O backsliding children,” says the LORD; “for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion. And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.
“Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land in those days,” says the LORD, “that they will say no more, ‘The ark of the covenant of the LORD.’ It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore. (Jeremiah 3:14-16)

Why did the ark vanish?

Because people put their faith in the ark of the Lord, not in the Lord of the ark.

So what can we conclude regarding the so called "Lost Ark"?

It wasn't sent to Africa as a gift t the Queen of Sheba.

It is not a "source of unspeakable power".

It is likely lost to the sands of history because God's people put their faith in a holy thing, instead of the Holy One.

Hopeful Monsters?

A question that used to be of interest only to coffee house philosophers and science fiction writers is becoming stunningly relevant in our day.

Just because we can - should we?

A story that illustrates just how real and even frightening this question has become grabbed Drudge Report headlines today.

MPs back creation of human-animal embryos

Cow /Mouse admixed embryos (also known as hybrids)

British scientists will be allowed to research devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s using human-animal embryos, after the House of Commons rejected a ban yesterday.

An amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill that would have outlawed the creation of “human admixed embryos” for medical research was defeated in a free vote by a majority of 160, preserving what Gordon Brown regarded as a central element of the legislation.

The Government is braced for defeat today, however, on a separate clause that would scrap the requirement that fertility clinics consider a child’s need for a father before treating patients. MPs will also consider amendments tonight that would cut the legal limit for abortion from 24 weeks to 22 or 20 weeks.

A second amendment, which would have banned the creation of “true hybrids” made by fertilising an animal egg with human sperm, or vice-versa, was also defeated yesterday by a majority of 63. Another free vote last night was expected to approve the use of embryo-screening to create “saviour siblings” suitable to donate umbilical cord blood to sick children.

Edward Leigh, Conservative MP for Gainsborough, moving the amendment to ban all admixed embryos, said that mingling animal and human DNA crossed an “ultimate boundary”. He said that exaggerated claims were giving patients false hope and that the dangers of the research were unknown. “In many ways we are like children playing with landmines without any concept of the dangers of the technology we are handling,” he said. Edward Leigh, Conservative MP for Gainsborough, moving the amendment to ban all admixed embryos, said that mingling animal and human DNA crossed an “ultimate boundary”. Children playing with landmines.

An appropriate analogy on a number of fronts.

First in a physical and practical sense this radical approach to a search for revolutionary cures for currently incurable diseases and conditions could prove to be a major waste of time, effort and money.

As has been detailed in this space, embryonic stem cell research has to date produced no cures or therapies. Adult stem cell research has produced at least eighty useful therapies and cures.

This Frankensteinian procedure is likely to come up empty as well.

Second, this is a landmine morally and ethically.

Adult stem cell research does not require the killing of people at an embryonic stage of development.

But the creation of monstrous mutations in the hopes that this twisted use of scientific technique will somehow make life better for those safely past that very same stage of development certainly will.

We are also promised that such "human admixed embryos" would never be allowed to come to term.

May I ask why we should believe this? If your personal ethical skill set allows you to think that animalizing human beings is fine and dandy at two weeks of development, why not stretch it to four weeks? Or 40 weeks for that matter?

Finally, this is a landmine spiritually.

In the book of Genesis we find a cautionary account of what happens when mankind gets a bit big for our britches.

Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.  And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.  Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.  And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.  And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.  Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”  So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.  Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:1-9)

I have always wondered if part of the timing of the Lord's return may coincide with the time when humanity comes to the brink of exercising God-like prerogatives stripped of any form of moral restraint.

Will the advent of "human admixed embryos" be the step over that line?

Gay Marriage - Why Not?

It seems like the fine art of radical judicial activism had gone into hibernation for a while.

But not unlike one of her famous earthquakes, the Supreme Court of the State of California has awakened this practice with a jolt.

California's top court legalizes gay marriage

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California's Supreme Court declared gay couples in the nation's biggest state can marry - a monumental but perhaps short-lived victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, hugs, kisses and at least one instant proposal of matrimony.

Same-sex couples could tie the knot in as little as a month. But the window could close soon after - religious and social conservatives are pressing to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November that would undo the Supreme Court ruling and ban gay marriage.

"Essentially, this boils down to love. We love each other. We now have equal rights under the law," declared a jubilant Robin Tyler, a plaintiff in the case along with her partner. She added: "We're going to get married. No Tupperware, please." http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080515/D90MB7SO0.html

It is important to note that the essence of this decision was to reverse a ballot initiative banning gay marriage that passed overwhelmingly. It is also important to note that this decision was rendered by a 4-3 majority.

Four justices in effect told millions that their votes were null and void, overridden by four legal minds who "know better".

California voters will have the chance to reverse this decision by amending the state constitution. Petitions signed by well over a million voters indicate that such a vote will take place in a matter of months. The resulting controversy may very well have a dramatic impact on the presidential election in the Fall.

But in the meantime, this decision raises a simple key question - why not? Why shouldn't gay couples have the same right to marry as heterosexual couples?

And in order to answer this question we have to ask, who gets to define marriage in the first place?

Now if marriage is simply a cultural convention, something invented by human beings to help build a more secure and stable society, then all bets are off.

The meaning of marriage?

It's strictly in the eye of the beholder.

Or in this case, a four judge majority.

But stop and consider a radical alternative.

What if marriage isn't a human instituition? What if it was created and designed by God?

This is precisely the view of no less an authority than Jesus.

“Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?  So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

Jesus defined marriage as one man and one woman committed together for life. This arrangement is not societal or psychological in it's roots, but spiritual.

The main thing the California Supreme Court decision shows us is just how far our society has drifted from any kind of Biblical mooring.

And sadly, the "traditional values" spokespeople I have heard on this issue seem to be ignoring this issue completely.

The arguments I have heard from the realms of psychology and sociology are ultimately unconvincing.

Why? All the citations and studies show is that our culture is divided on this issue. You've got an opinion, I've got an opinion, all God's Children got an opinion.

The main question this issue raises is "Sez who?"

Who are you to deny these people the right to marry?

Me? I'm nobody.

But if God has defined marriage.

If God has demonstrated that He has defined marriage by the life, death and resurrection of His Son.

We ignore His clear instruction at our own peril.

Would You Let This Man Fix Your Plumbing?

Apparently Albert Einstein took a dim view of faith in a personal God.

Belief in God 'childish,' Jews not chosen people: Einstein letter

Albert Einstein described belief in God as "childish superstition" and said Jews were not the chosen people, in a letter to be sold in London this week, an auctioneer said Tuesday.

The father of relativity, whose previously known views on religion have been more ambivalent and fuelled much discussion, made the comments in response to a philosopher in 1954.

As a Jew himself, Einstein said he had a great affinity with Jewish people but said they "have no different quality for me than all other people".

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.

"No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this," he wrote in the letter written on January 3, 1954 to the philosopher Eric Gutkind, cited by The Guardian newspaper.

The German-language letter is being sold Thursday by Bloomsbury Auctions in Mayfair after being in a private collection for more than 50 years, said the auction house's managing director Rupert Powell.

In it, the renowned scientist, who declined an invitation to become Israel's second president, rejected the idea that the Jews are God's chosen people.

"For me the Jewish religion like all others is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions," he said.

"And the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people."

And he added: "As far as my experience goes, they are no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything 'chosen' about them."

Previously the great scientist's comments on religion -- such as "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind" -- have been the subject of much debate, used notably to back up arguments in favour of faith.

Powell said the letter being sold this week gave a clear reflection of Einstein's real thoughts on the subject. "He's fairly unequivocal as to what he's saying. There's no beating about the bush," he told AFP. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=080513122249.m3ds3b6j&show_article=1

For some, this revelation settles everything.

"See! Einstein thought faith was silly. You can't deny that. Unless you think you are smarter than Einstein."

Well, I can't deny that Einstein and I would disagree on the inspiration and reliability of the Bible.

But consider this.

Einstein and Jesus Christ would also disagree on the inspiration and trustworthiness of the Bible.

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)

Jesus stated that rather than being "an expression and product of human weakness", the Bible is the Word of God. Down to the last jot and tittle.

Here's the big question. Who do we believe?

Now, don't get me wrong.

If I had a question regarding theoretical physics, or a pointer or two on how to build a nuclear reactor in my garage, I can't think of any more qualified source of guidance than Albert Einstein.

But just because Einstein was gifted in the world of mathematics, doesn't automatically make him an expert on morality, spirituality or household plumbing for that matter.

But what credentials does Jesus bring to the table as a reliable source of insight on eternal and spiritual issues?

As Paul pointed out:

"Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31)

No disrespect intended, but when it comes to credibility to speak on eternal, spiritual issues we must take two indisputable facts into account.

Albert Einstein lies a'moulderin' in the grave.

But Jesus Christ has risen from the dead.

If You Won't Preach...

As a long time Chicago Cubs baseball fan, there are certain truths that I hold to be self evident.

No one will ever take the title of "Mr. Cub" from Ernie Banks.

No baseball experience will ever take the place of watching a game at Wrigley Field.

No announcer will ever take the place of Harry Caray in the hearts of the Cubs faithful.

Harry Caray memorialized in a statue near Wrigley Field in Chicago.
Harry Caray memorialized in a statue near Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Harry was not what you would call an objective journalist.

His calling of a Cubs game was a celebration of 'homerism' in its purest form.

And nowhere was his unabashed love of the Cubs on fuller display than when he would lead the Wrigley faithful in the 7th inning stretch singing of "Take Me Out To the Ball Game."

After Harry passed away, the Cubs have attempted to keep this tradition alive by bringing in various guest celebrities to fill Harry's song leading role.

To say this has been an uneven experience is an understatement.

To whit:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Tony-Romo-butchers-the-7th-Inning-Stretch-at-Wri?urn=mlb,81972

Errgh!!

Now don't get me wrong.  Tony Romo is an outstanding quarterback.

A singer? Not so much.

It reminds me of a famous line from the famous Bible teacher with the classic Texas twang, J. Vernon McGee.

Before he would share at a church he would find the worship leader and make this famous bargain -

"If you won't preach, I won't sing."

The bottom line? We have all been given gifts by God to be used for His glory.

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. (I Peter 3:10-11)

The secret of life is to find your gift. Take a look at the areas of service to God that bring you the greatest joy and impact the lives of others.

But equally important is to stick with your gift. Practice it. Perfect it. Prize it.

But don't try to imitate others whose gifts you may not share.

I love to relate God's Word to others.

But when it comes to singing? I'm right there with Tony Romo.

How wonderful it is that the Lord has placed us all in His body with unique gifts.

Focus on the gifts that God has given you and fruit will follow!

Focus On the Epicenter

It has no natural resources to speak of.

It has little value from a military or strategic point of view.

It is not a center of trade or commerce.

Yet the fate of this city controls the fate of the entire world.

Why is Jerusalem literally the key to God's plans for mankind?

How Low Can You Go?

Just when you think Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad couldn't get any farther out in left field, he manages to take another step back on the warning track.

Ahmadinejad: Israel a 'stinking corpse'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that the state of Israel is a "stinking corpse" that is destined to disappear, the French news agency AFP reported.

"Those who think they can revive the stinking corpse of the usurping and fake Israeli regime by throwing a birthday party are seriously mistaken," the official IRNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as having said.

"Today the reason for the Zionist regime's existence is questioned, and this regime is on its way to annihilation."

Ahmadinejad further stated that Israel "has reached the end like a dead rat after being slapped by the Lebanese" - referring to the Second Lebanon War in the summer of 2006. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1209627040670&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

Way to spoil a birthday party, Mahmoud.

Actually, it's hard for me to imagine Mahmoud being the balloon animal/pin the tail on the donkey type anyway.

But as we noted yesterday, this outrageous, almost silly rhetoric would be laughable if the following story wasn't fresh in our minds.

Israel: Iran could have nukes by '09

With Iran racing forward with its nuclear program, Israel now believes the Islamic Republic will master centrifuge technology and be able to begin enriching uranium on a military scale this year, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, center, visits the Natanz Uranium Enrichment Facility some 322 kilometers south of the capital Teheran, Iran.
Photo: AP

The new assessment moves up Israel's forecasts on Teheran's nuclear program by almost a full year - from 2009 to the end of 2008. According to the new timeline, Iran could have a nuclear weapon by the middle of next year.

Iran, a senior defense official said on Tuesday, had encountered numerous technical obstacles on its way to enriching uranium but was now on track to master the technology needed to enrich uranium within six months.

Israel is also concerned that Teheran is developing a cruise missile that can evade interception by the Arrow, the IDF's anti-ballistic missile defense system. Iran is suspected of having smuggled Ukrainian X-55 cruise missiles and using them as models for an independent, domestic project. A cruise missile, which flies at low altitudes to dodge radar detection and interception, could be used to carry a nuclear warhead. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1209627027461&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

If the idea of crazy people with guns make us nervous, how about crazy people with stealth technology equipped cruise missiles?

There is no doubt that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is a threat to Israel and world peace.

But there is another aspect of this story we must also keep in mind.

No matter how well armed and filled with hate Iran's leaders might be, they are no match for the One Who stands with Israel.

Do not keep silent, O God!
         Do not hold Your peace,
And do not be still, O God!
 For behold, Your enemies make a tumult;
And those who hate You have lifted up their head.
They have taken crafty counsel against Your people,
And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.
They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”

O my God, make them like the whirling dust,
Like the chaff before the wind!
As the fire burns the woods,
And as the flame sets the mountains on fire,
So pursue them with Your tempest,
And frighten them with Your storm.
Fill their faces with shame,
That they may seek Your name, O LORD.
Let them be confounded and dismayed forever;
Yes, let them be put to shame and perish,
That they may know that You, whose name alone is the LORD,
Are the Most High over all the earth. (Psalm 83:-14,14-18)

Too Far Out For Tehran?

The popular comedian Jeff Foxworthy has made a career out of a routine called, "You may be a red neck if..."

You know the drill -

"You may be a red neck if you think the last line to the Star Spangled Banner is 'Gentlemen, start your engines.'"

"You maybe a red neck if you think Possum is 'The other white meat.' "

"You may be a red neck if you think Sherlock Holmes is a housing project just outside of Mobile."

But these days there's a new variation on this theme.

It's being played in Iran.

And it's called "You may be a fanatic."

Now, I realize that you have to be in another solar system to be branded a bit too extreme by the mad mullahs who run this Islamic theocracy.

But our old friend Mahmoud Ahmadinejhad may have succeeded in boldly going where no unstable crack pot has ever gone before.

Iran clerics rebuke Ahmadinejad over 'hidden imam'

Clerics have told President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to stick to more worldly issues after he was quoted as saying the "hidden imam" of Shiite Islam was directing Iran.

Ahmadinejad has always been a devotee of the Mahdi, the twelfth imam of Shiite Islam, who Shiites believe disappeared more than a thousand years ago and who will return one day to usher in a new era of peace and harmony.

But in a speech to theology students broadcast by state television on Monday, Ahmadinejad went further than ever before in emphasising his belief that the Mahdi is playing a critical role in Iran's day-to-day politics.

"The Imam Mahdi is in charge of the world and we see his hand directing all the affairs of the country," he said in the speech, which appears to date from last month but has only now been broadcast.

"We must solve Iran's internal problems as quickly as possible. Time is lacking. A movement has started for us to occupy ourselves with our global responsibilities, which are arriving with great speed."

Two leading clerics retorted that Ahmadinejad would be better off concentrating on Iran's social problems -- most notably its double-digit inflation -- than indulging in such mystical rhetoric.

"If Ahmadinejad wants to say that the hidden imam is supporting the decisions of the government, it is not true," sniped Gholam Reza Mesbahi Moghadam, the spokesman of the conservative Association of Combatant Clerics.

"For sure, the hidden imam does not approve of inflation of 20 percent, the high cost of living and numerous other errors," he said, according to the Kargozaran daily.

Ali Asghari, a member of the conservative Hezbollah faction in parliament, told the president not to link the management of the country to the imam.

"Ahmadinejad would do better to worry about social problems like inflation ... and other terrestrial affairs," Etemad Melli daily quoted him as saying.

Since becoming president in 2005, Ahmadinejad has repeatedly stated that his government is paving the way for the return of the Mahdi and chided his foes for not believing that his return is imminent. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=080507094625.zy32hvir&show_article=1

Now all this would be comical if it were not for the fact that Ahmadinejhad's government is feverishly working on developing atomic weapons.

Or the fact that they already possess missile technology able to hit any point in continental Europe.

Or that Ahmadinejhad has vowed to wipe Israel off the map with a single blow.

The inception of an alliance between Vlad Putin's Russia and Ahmadinejad's Iran is frighteningly in line with the predicted Last Days invasion of Israel in Ezekiel 38-39.

Even more significantly, Ahmadinejad's belief in the Imam Mahdi also stipulates that he will return at a time when a global war is already taking place.

We have seen examples in the conflict in Iraq where Ahmadinejad's fellow Shiite Moslems have instigated conflicts with the idea of forcing the arrival of the Mahdi to take place.

If Ahmadinejad's fanatical devotion to his messianic vision is so intense it is raising eyebrows among his fellow Shiite leaders in Iran, it begs the question of just how far he would be willing to go to see his dream come true.

Jesus warned of an increase in "wars and rumors of wars" as the time of His return would draw near. (Matthew 24:6-8)

Wouldn't it be ironic if Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was unwittingly setting the stage for an entirely different set of prophecies to be fulfilled?

Haven't Got Time For the Pain?

What does it take to raise an eyebrow these days?

If you are a regular visitor to Scott's blog you know that we do our best to point out the signs of the times, birth pain like events that indicate the return of Jesus may be drawing near.

Yesterday we saw a birth pain that had a two for one significance for students of biblical prophecy.

Burma cyclone: 10,000 killed in ONE town as massive wave is blamed for death toll set to top 60,000

Emergency workers have said more than 60,000 are feared to have been killed by the tropical cyclone in Burma as British aid agencies appealed for the country's secretive military junta to allow them in to help.

Teams of aid workers are on standby for Burma's military rulers to grant visas and access to a country where an estimated one million people are homeless and entire villages are said to have been swept away.

President George Bush urged the military junta to accept disaster teams from the United States as a charity worker warned : "People are saying this is worse than the Tsunami. It's like a war zone. The number of dead is just staggering." http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=564119&in_page_id=1811

How staggering?

Ripped apart: The cyclone's 120mph winds tore this Rangoon factory to pieces

Devastation: Satellite photos of the Irawaddy delta last month and, right, yesterday show how floods have swallowed up swathes of lowland around Rangoon, in the red box

Official figures say more than 24,000 are confirmed dead so far with a further 41,000 missing.

An estimated 10,000 people alone died in the town of Bogalay, 50 miles south west of the capital Rangoon - the majority victims of a 12ft high wave whipped up by the 120 mph winds that left 95 per cent of homes destroyed.

"More deaths were caused by the tidal wave than the storm itself," Minister for Relief and Resettlement Maung Maung Swe said yesterday, adding : "It swept away and inundated half the houses in low-lying villages...they did not have anywhere to flee."

This event may end up creating more damage and loss of life than the Tsunami Disaster of a couple of years ago.

Jesus did say that unprecedented natural disasters would increase in frequency and intensity as the Last Days draw near.

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences and earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8)

But He also pointed out another troubling sign.

And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. (Matthew 24:12)

Do you ever get the impression that we are suffering from a case of "Disaster Fatigue"?

After Katrina, and the Tsunami, and 9/11, another 60,000 killed by a freakish spasm of a fallen world barely registers two minutes of coverage on the news and a yawn from viewers.

Take a moment to remember that 60,000 isn't just a statistic, but a number that represents mothers and fathers and children, just like the people you love.

Take a moment to pray, and support effective relief works and ministries that can meet both the spiritual and physical challenges in this circumstance.

And pray that we never become so jaded that a disaster like this leaves us unmoved.

And You Thought "Nahoul the Jew Hating Bee" Was Crazy..

We have documented in this space the bizarre excesses of Hamas TV's kiddie show "Tomorrow's Pioneers".

But have you ever wondered what those same creative minds are serving up for adults?

Wonder no more.

Hamas Holocaust perversion:

Jews planned Holocaust to kill handicapped Jews

By Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook, Apr. 30, 2008

Jewish leaders planned the Holocaust to kill "disabled and handicapped" Jews to avoid having to care for them, according to a Hamas TV educational program. As much of the world prepared to commemorate Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Hamas TV presented its latest sinister twist on Holocaust denial.

The Hamas TV educational program, broadcast last week, taught that the murder of Jews in the Holocaust was a Zionist plot with two goals:

1- To eliminate "disabled and handicapped" Jews by sending them to death camps, so they would not be a burden on the future state of Israel.

2- At the same time, the Holocaust served to make "the Jews seem persecuted" so they could "benefit from international sympathy."

Amin Dabur, head of the Palestinian "Center for Strategic Research" explained that "the Israeli Holocaust - the whole thing was a joke, and part of the perfect show that [Zionist leader and future Israeli prime minister] Ben Gurion put on." The "young energetic and able" were sent to Israel, while the handicapped were sent "so there would be a Holocaust."

The following is the transcript,

Al-Aqsa TV (Hamas) April 18 2008

Narrator:

"The disabled and handicapped are a heavy burden on the state,"

said the terrorist leader, Ben Gurion. [Zionist leader - Israel's first PM]

The Satanic Jews thought up an evil plot [the Holocaust] to be rid of the burden of the disabled and handicapped, in twisted criminal ways.

[Picture: Holocaust death camp, dead bodies]

While they accuse the Nazis or others so the Jews would seem persecuted, and try to benefit from international sympathy. They were the first to invent the methods of evil and oppression."

Amin Dabur, head of the Palestinian "Center for Strategic Research":

"About the Israeli Holocaust, the whole thing was a joke and part of the perfect show that Ben Gurion put on, who focused on strong and energetic youth [for Israel], while the rest- the disabled, the handicapped, and people with special needs, they were sent to [to die]- if it can be proven historically. They were sent [to die] so there would be a holocaust, so Israel could "play" it for world sympathy."

Narrator:

"The alleged numbers of Jews [killed in the Holocaust] were merely for propaganda." http://www.pmw.org.il/Bulletins_apr2008.html#b300408

If you are following along at home -

The Holocaust -

Which never really happened

Was really a collaborative effort between Hitler and David Ben Gurion

To purify the Jewish race.

Really.

Two questions.

#1. What are they smoking in the break room at Hamas TV?

#2. What chance of success does negotiation with people so given over to the insanity of hate really have?

The complete break from reality represented by this "documentary" reminds us that the conflict in the Middle East is essentially spiritual.

And a preview of coming events.

When confronted with the picture Bible prophecy paints of the rise of the Anti-Christ, some have objected, "Right! The whole world will follow this last days dictator? The whole world will think persecuting Jews and Christians will be a great idea? People will worship this guy? How could this really happen?"

The Bible gives us an answer.

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (II Thessalonians 2:9-12)

GK Chesterton once observed, "When a man ceases to believe in God, he doesn't believe in nothing. He believes in anything."

Hamas TV shows us just how dangerously true that can be.
